Jahazi House and garden are yours to explore. The house sits directly on the beach, mere steps from the sea and the Lamu channel’s calm lagoon-like water.
A private boat is ready to bring you for snorkeling, water skiing, fishing, visiting Shela, manda, or UNESCO heritage Lamu old town etc (prices upon request).
Jahazi House, named after the historical sailing dhows that brought Lamu its trading wealth, stands right on the edge of the Indian Ocean in a large garden of frangipani, fruit trees and shrubs. From the expansive, first floor makuti-covered veranda you can watch the dhows come and go, delivering fish. The house is designed along traditional lines around an inner courtyard, which holds a very private swimming pool, cooling the public rooms and bedrooms.
On arrival by boat, it’s just a few steps up the beach to the house, past 2 giant cycads and footbaths with floating frangipani flowers, onto the welcome shade of the wrap-around terrace. When you enter the house, you can see right through it, across the internal courtyard and pool with its fragrant frangipani tree into the garden beyond. The entry hall has a baraza area, a large cushioned day sofa and a dining area, leading into the inner courtyard with its beautiful deep clear pool.
The four ground-floor guest bedrooms are all accessed from the inner courtyard and are stylishly furnished with ensuite shower rooms and their own private verandas. The verandas feature writing desks, occasional tables, chairs and a traditional Lamu day bed. There is a covered baraza area behind the pool that can also be used for sleeping. It leads through an ancient carved door onto a wooden deck with two swinging beds overlooking the garden.
The roof is one huge terrace, partially covered with makuti to provide a shaded bar, eating and sitting area. Here, overlooking simply everything, including the beach and sea views, is a wonderfully cool and spacious master wing, with its private library and bedroom, ensuite dressing room and bathroom area.
The kitchen and staff area is separate and holds staff bedrooms, seating areas, washrooms and storerooms. Frangipani, jasmine and lime trees have been planted in abundance around the house, which comes fully staffed with a cook, room/table steward, laundress, boat captain and gardener.
There are no cars and no roads on Lamu island, only donkey trails, boat rides and leisurely beach strolls. An advantage of this, is that our beaches are completely private – no one uses the beach other than house guests and house staff (and perhaps a fisherman visiting the kitchen). Shela and Lamu towns are a 20 minute boat ride away. A big Dhow, is available to hire for sundowners, beach lunches or day trips and can be arranged through our butler. Price list on demand.
“Oh no, time to go. I hope for a massive rainstorm so we have to stay longer! You’ve looked after us so well. Thank you so much. See you next time.”
